Won (Ryan) Lee, violin/founder
Ryan is the founder of Strings for Little Stars, and currently teaches several violin classes in the program. He is a student at the Bergen County Academies and a principal violinist in his school orchestra. Since the seventh grade, Ryan has played in both the North Jersey Regional and New Jersey All-State Orchestras, and continues to dedicate several hours a day to violin practice. Through this organization, Ryan hopes to spread musical interest and literacy both in his North Jersey region and throughout impoverished areas that may not have sufficient opportunities to experience music.
Sarah Chung, cello, Oakland
Sarah is currently a student majoring in Music at the Bergen County Academies. Last fall, she joined Strings for Little Stars as a cello teacher. Starting out playing the piano at the age of four, she decided to move on to the cello when she was eight years old. At the Bergen County Academies, she is currently a member of the concert choir and first chair of the school orchestra. As a cellist, Sarah has accomplished many additional feats for her age and experience level. Despite the fact that she has only been studying the cello for six years, Sarah has spent four in the Bergen Youth Orchestra, eventually becoming second chair and co-principal. In addition, she recently won the 2009 Bergen Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition. From seventh grade to present, she has been a member of New Jersey Junior and High School Regional Orchestras. She has also begun her first year at the Manhattan School of Music, playing in the Symphony Orchestra and currently studying with Deborah Park. When she's not playing the cello, Sarah enjoys watching movies, hanging out with her friends, and traveling with her family.
Stephanie Jeong, violin, Woodcliff Lake
Stephanie became a teacher for Strings for Little Stars in the fall of 2009. She is currently a student at the Bergen County Academies, and enjoys playing violin in her school orchestra. Outside of school, Stephanie has played in the North Jersey Regional Orchestra as well as several other groups. Stephanie enjoys working with children through the program, and she believes that teaching them how to play an instrument that has influenced her own life greatly. In her spare time, Stephanie enjoys reading, listening to music, and watching old movies. Stephanie believes that her participation and experience in the Strings for Little Stars program will not only build confidence in herself as a teacher, but will also aid her in a future career in the education or human services field.
Amy Oh, violin, Hillsdale
Amy is a student at Pascack Valley High School, and loves
playing the violin. In her time as a student musician, Amy has performed in a variety of ensembles. In fourth grade, Amy was the Principal 2nd Violin for Bergen Youth
Orchestra, and in seventh grade, she played in the North Jersey Regional
Orchestra. While she can't say that practicing those scales and pieces perpetually is the most exciting thing in the world, she knows that's what it takes
to become the violinist she hopes to be someday! She hopes that she will be able to help students who want to play
violin and learn to appreciate music.
Dong Hyun Kim, violin, Tenafly
Although Dong Hyun is in the Academy for Engineering and Design Technology at the Bergen County Academies,
he loves playing in the school’s phenomenal orchestra. Even outside of school,
however, Dong Hyun has taken the time to play in many other orchestras such as
the Bergen Youth Orchestra, as well as both the North Jersey Regional Intermediate and High School Orchestras. In particular, he enjoys
playing with the N&K Orchestra. For four years, Dong Hyun performed with the
orchestra at Carnegie Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, the United Nations,
Bronx-Lebanon Hospital, and various other places. Furthermore, Dong Hyun has played at the Lincoln Center for the 14th Young Ensembles Program of Chamber Music Society. When he's not playing the violin,
Dong Hyun enjoys playing golf, listening to classic rock, and meeting up with friends. He hopes that being part of Strings for Little Stars will allow him to learn more about teaching and service.
